07-17-2026 - Do you remember when Internet advertising hit the scene, and ads for Internet advertising would claim that your ad could be seen by millions? Sometimes it was 100 million, or some other arbitrary, but astronomical, number. People selling this new-fangled online advertising thought people were stupid enough to believe that just because there was an Internet, and millions and millions of people had computers with modems, that all those people were just waiting to beat a path to your ad. Sadly, I still see this type of advertising. Then, there was the ad that offered to put your 49 words on the Internet for $19.95. I just want to know where they came up with those two numbers! Then, there was the Internet advertising offer that did not include the website address where your ads would appear. I wrote to the person posting the ad, and he told me I would not receive that information until I submitted my ad. What if it was a website with content I didn't want to be associated with? Of course, I passed on the offer. I think the reason was that if I had gone to the website, I would have found I could place my ad, bypassing the dealer. There were a few such situations I'm aware of. I think if you're going to be the webmaster of an advertising website, and offer dealerships, advertisers should not be able to bypass those dealers who spent time, energy, and money to find the customer. But what do I know?

07-17-2026 - Good Morning! It's Friday, and I have nothing on the schedule for today. We have thunderstorms passing through the area. That's a good thing because our water supply lakes are getting lower by the day. Are you looking for something original to sell? Something that no one else has on the market? How about reports on something in your personal or working life experience? A skill? A hobby? My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.
07-16-2026 - I dug out a very old book and thumbed through it. It's called "How to Sell Your Software", by Robert Scenot. It was published in 1995 and was an updated version of The Shareware Book, which was published in 1991. I had a copy of that one on a computer disk 30 years ago, but it's long lost. According to Google AI Overview: "Shareware is a try-before-you-buy software distribution model where developers allow users to download and test a program for free. After an evaluation period or to unlock premium features, users must pay a fee to continue using the software legally." I was investigating shareware back then as a way to distribute some ebooks I had written. Anyway, the newer "How to Sell Your Software" book has an extensive 30-page section on "Classified Ads and Direct Mail." It's more detailed than anything I have ever seen making the rounds in the Extra Income Mail Order circles.
07-16-2026 - The U.S. Postal Service issued 10 collectible stamps on the 11th of this month. I didn't order any, but I did order some Bruce Lee, Chinese Year of the Horse, and a few other selections.

07-16-2026 - Co-Op advertising group - I thought about this type of advertising back in my "disk publishing" days of the mid-1990s. It will work just as well on a thumb drive or website. It involves bringing together a handful of advertising publishers who agree to place advertising from all group members in their publications. So, when one member sells a text ad, that ad is sent by email to the other web publishers who put it on their websites, at no charge. This requires that members agree to the types of advertising they will accept—text is a lot easier—pricing, and how long ads will stay posted. Members can advertise something like "Buy ad space on my site, and that ad will be posted to (insert number here) other websites for the same term." Adjust this idea to fit your needs. (This post was previously published at one of my other "Mail Order journals.)

07-16-2026 - This is a call for a different kind of 100-circulation adsheet, a "progressively mailed" adsheet. How does it work? These adsheets hold a maximum of 100 100-word ads. No display ads. New ads go to the top, and the 101st ad falls off the bottom. The latest dealer to post an ad gets a copy—about 6 sheets of paper. Every ad gets 100 mailings; they just don't get it very fast. This means no pressure on you, the publisher, to mail a certain number within a certain time period. This pressure has caused more than a few adsheet publishers to grow noses a foot long! I don't think we can have too many of this type of adsheet. No dealer has to advertise in every adsheet every month. Rotate through them. Since each publisher is mailing to their own in-house list, an endless variety of prospects will see your ads. You'll have to give away some ad space in order to jump-start the publication. (This post was previously published at one of my other "Mail Order" journals.)

07-16-2026 - An item I love to get in the mail is the “one-sheet wonder.” This is simply a single-page sales letter or circular, preferably one-sided, but two-sided is okay, of good quality, not a copy of a copy of a copy, promoting a single offer.
07-16-2026 - A good business manager hires optimists as salespeople and pessimists to run the credit department.
07-16-2026 - There are a heck of a lot of Mail Order Dealers out there who have never heard of the "first impression” concept. I say this because not a week goes by that I don't get at least one sales circular that is a copy of a copy of a copy from Hell!
