10-11-2026 - It was 1975, and it was my first trip to California. I was headed to the Presidio of San Francisco to play Army for two more years. I stopped at a small diner somewhere near either Bakersfield or Barstow. My memory is a little fuzzy on that. I took a seat in a booth, and the first thing I noticed was an index card on the wall that said: "Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward sat here." I should have asked which side I was sitting on, but I didn't. Also, the CB Radio was alive and well with trucker and 4-wheeler chatter back then. I had plenty of entertainment on that long, slow trip from Texas to California at 55 MPH! That brings me to 1977 when I departed San Francisco.

10-11-2026 - I survived, though not unscathed, the “Great Bakersfield Dust Storm of 1977.” According to Wikipedia, the storm began on December 19th. On December 20th, I left the U.S. Army at the Presidio of San Francisco and headed home to Texas in my little CB Radio-equipped Datsun B210. Bakersfield, California, was on my planned route. I heard warnings of high winds around Bakersfield, but nothing so serious that I'd consider a detour. Either that, or I had a case of “get-home-itis.” That’s possible. Entering the danger zone, I saw “big rig” trucks, probably empty, overturned, and cars on the side of the road with one side of the paint sanded off. To this day, I don’t remember what prompted me to continue, but I did. I made it through the storm with a sanded-down windshield as the only casualty. It was a problem only when the sun was in front of me. I didn't replace it for three years.

10-11-2026 - Not long ago, I received an offer to post my ads on a "business opportunity website." The ad didn't include the website address. This was a missed opportunity to promote the website and the ads carried on it. However, I think I know why they omitted the web address. They didn't want me to go to the website to place my ad order, completely bypassing them, the dealer, who spent money on the ad. This is just my opinion, but I'm going to pass on the offer.

10-11-2026 - Good Morning! Today is Sunday, and it's also National Sausage Pizza Day, Pastor Appreciation Day, Dysautonomia Awareness Month, Southern Food Heritage Day, Black Girl Day Off, Seed Gathering Season, Baku Jazz Festival, and Back Care Awareness Week. A Little Caesar's sausage pizza sounds good. It's also time to give my generator its semi-regular exercise run. I'll try to get to that today. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

10-10-2026 - In the grocery section of a local Walmart, I saw a box of IHOP pancake-flavored cereal. I'm wondering whether they can replicate the rubbery texture of the pancakes I usually get at IHOP. I don't think I'll buy a box to find out.

10-10-2026 - Today, I received a checking copy of Liberty Press magazine containing one of my "site announcement" ads. Everything else was, you guessed it, programs of one type or another. Mostly gifting programs.

10-10-2026 - Yesterday, I received a circular for a gifting program with 5 positions (people) that I was supposed to send money to. Only three positions were filled. The other two said "Free Space". Different people filled the first three spaces, but each had the same mailing address. Wouldn't it be better to give those positions, free of charge, to unrelated people if you want the circular for a new program to look authentically active? To me, having only family members does not instill confidence. Well, I don't do programs, so what do I know?

10-10-2026 - In the news - In Detroit, on Wednesday, Oct. 7, a group of people clashed with a postal worker. Someone in the group fired a shot. No one was injured, but four people were taken into custody.

10-10-2026 - I think someone should create greeting cards with a home-based “Extra Income Mail Order” theme. I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen a product like this. These holiday cards could be included with orders and/or order-fulfillment mail. The cards don’t have to be elaborate and can be designed to fit business-size #9 and #10 envelopes. Any takers?

10-09-2026 - I wonder what would happen if certain Mail Order Dealers gave a prospective employer a résumé in the same condition as the sales material they send me and others. Isn't distributing sales material to prospective customers the same thing? Would these folks hand an employer a résumé that was a copy of a copy of a copy, with the original placed crookedly on the copy machine and black specks from a dirty platen scattered about? I guess they might. UPDATE: I got a gifting program offer today with "chicken scratch" writing all over one side of the envelope. 10-09-2026 - I might have mentioned last month that I closed my USPS account after an incident where they stretched a stamp order out for three weeks. They shipped the order only after I closed the account. I decided to buy stamps at the post office. Last night, I decided to order again on the website, but I did so as a guest. Let’s see what happens.

10-09-2026 - Not long ago, I was telling my wife about a scene in House of Cards where a female reporter told a woman she was going to publish a story about her. That woman told the reporter, "Go to town, b***h!" We agreed that we don't hear "go to town" as often as we did in the "old days". Anyway, one of the burner igniters on the kitchen stove sparked intermittently. I told her I would check whether it was loaded with crud. I came across this in an online search: "Clean the igniter orifice with the sewing needle. The orifice is pretty large so you can go to town." I'm not sure what the orifice has to do with the spark, but go to town anyway!

10-08-2026 - Do you remember how dark and drab the first Batman movie with Michael Keaton was? Then came the Dick Tracy movie with Warren Beatty, which had to be the most colorful movie ever filmed. Do you remember? I received a mailing today from Dan Gill that I can only describe as the “Dick Tracy” of Mail-Order mailings! This was a multi-page, professionally produced, full-color offering for several products and services. I’ve never been big on color as long as the documents are clean and sharp, but this mailing really got my attention.

10-08-2026 - I found myself on a website promoting some income opportunity. The first thing I checked was the scroll bar on the right side of the screen. It was very tiny. This told me right away that the page was a mile long. To me, mile-long web pages promoting an extra income opportunity are just trolling for dummies. I hit the little X and moved on.

10-07-2026 - Back many decades ago, six to be exact, I was in high school R.O.T.C. One day the commandant invited us to bring our personal rifles to school to fire them on the school firing range. This was a one-time offer. Several others and I took him up on his offer. On the appointed day, I walked to school with my .22 caliber rifle in a soft case. In a soft case, it looked just like a rifle. When I got to school, I put the rifle in my locker. When R.O.T.C. time rolled around, I took the rifle from my locker, walked to the indoor range, fired it, and walked it back. At the end of the day, I walked home with it. No one gave me a second look. No cops were called. No damns were given. It was a different time.

Keep in mind that the ability to post something instantly doesn't relieve you of the responsibility to verify the validity of the information.

10-06-2026 - From the U.S. Department of Justice - ST. LOUIS – Three men who were involved in a conspiracy to steal checks from the mail and deposit them into fraudulently-opened bank accounts were sentenced to prison Thursday. U.S. District Judge Joshua M. Divine sentenced Isaiah W. Douglas, 25, of Champaign, Ill. to 39 months in prison, Luis A. Franco-Gonzalez, 26, of Rantoul, Ill., to 34 months in prison and Isaiah B. Handford, 28, to 33 months. Douglas and others stole checks, or caused them to be stolen, from U.S. Postal Service collection boxes in and around St. Louis. Handford and Franco-Gonzalez then posed as representatives of the victim businesses and opened or tried to open bank accounts with fraudulent documents supplied by Douglas.

10-06-2026 - Now and then, I receive a postcard inside an envelope. I received one today. Why not just mail the postcard at the cheaper rate? If you don't have postcard stamps handy, why not put a letter stamp on the postcard and at least save an envelope? This person and I don't think alike. It's not a big deal, but it gave me something to write about.

10-06-2026 - At a ceremony today at the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Postal Service issued a semipostal stamp, Know the Facts About Fentanyl. "The stamp will raise funds to advance research and raise awareness to combat this ongoing epidemic while providing a message encouraging hope, healing, and recovery," according to the USPS.

10-06-2026 - Do you remember the old Once A Month Association, or OAMA? I think the originator passed away over a decade ago and the program along with him. I have not seen mention of OAMA in years. It was one of the early gifting programs. The program cost $15 fee to join. Of that $15, $10 went to the member who recruited you and $5 went to the program originator. You had to send in $15 each month to remain a member. In return, you got to keep $10 per month from everyone you recruited. There was no product involved.

10-06-2026 - For years I've read that the correct amount of toothpaste on the brush was about the size of a pencil eraser or a pea. The instructions on my toothpaste say to apply at least one inch. Sounds like a way to make me use up more paste without more results. That's just my opinion. Your mileage, or inchage, may vary. Is inchage even a word? From the Urban Dictionary: "The area in square inches of your property that you own after you have paid your monthly mortgage payment." That's funny!
