07-29-2026 - Having been spoiled by the Keurig coffee maker at the lakeside house we rented over the weekend, I bought a Keurig Mini today. It’s all I need in the office. Now I need some reusable K Cups!

07-29-2026 - Today, I received a completely handwritten sales letter and two sales circulars in the mail promoting two money-making programs. One program is supposed to provide unlimited $5.00 rolls of First Class stamps. The other offered a guaranteed monthly income. The sales material was poorly copied, as was the handwritten letter. Not very convincing. Be convincing.

07-29-2026 - Start a progressively mailed email adsheet. When someone purchases ad space, their ad goes to the top of the list, and the updated adsheet is emailed to them. Their ad moves down one space each time a new ad is received. You determine the word limit, price, how many ads are allowed before the oldest ad falls off the ad adsheet, and other particulars.

07-29-2026 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, and the name Wednesday comes from Old English Wodnesdæg, meaning "Woden's day" or the day of the Germanic god Woden (also known as Odin). I didn’t know that until just a few minutes ago. I’m not sure what else I can do with that information, but I do know my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

07-28-2026 - Business is the art of extracting money from another man's pocket without resorting to violence.

07-28-2026 - Years ago, I had a copy of a now-defunct mail-order advertiser on my desk. The cover of that advertiser featured drawings of cartoon animals. I had a visitor come into my “office,” and I quickly dropped something over that advertiser because I was embarrassed that a grown man was reading material featuring hand-drawn cartoon animals. Not much has changed, and I don’t know why. We know we’re not advertising to kids, so what’s with all the cartoon graphics? At least I don't have to worry about those ads here.

07-28-2026 - I know a guy who, back in 1980, carried $1,000 with him at all times in case he saw a car he wanted to buy. He would buy a few cars a year, clean them up, and resell them. $1,000 back then is the same as $4,000 today. Was he afraid of getting robbed? Maybe, but he was a cop with a gun in his pocket when he was off-duty. He would probably say to the robber, "Okay, let me get my wallet out of my pocket. Oops, wrong pocket!"

07-28-2026 - REPOST - This is a call for a different kind of 100-circulation adsheet, a "progressively mailed" adsheet. How does it work? These adsheets hold a maximum of 100 100-word ads. No display ads. New ads go to the top, and the 101st ad falls off the bottom. The latest dealer to post an ad gets a copy—about 6 sheets of paper. Every ad gets 100 mailings; they just don't get it very fast. This means no pressure on you, the publisher, to mail a certain number within a certain time period. This pressure has caused more than a few adsheet publishers to grow noses a foot long! I don't think we can have too many of this type of adsheet. No dealer has to advertise in every adsheet every month. Rotate through them. Since each publisher is mailing to their own in-house list, an endless variety of prospects will see your ads. You'll have to give away some ad space in order to jump-start the publication. (This post was previously published at one of my earlier "Mail Order" journals.)

07-28-2026 - We need more websites dedicated to mail-order buying and selling. The only such websites I’ve seen, other than mine, are advertising-only. No editorial page, no blog or journal posts. Just ads. Come on, dealers, get that website up and running! Web hosting is dirt cheap, and you don’t need fancy website bells and whistles that add nothing but bloat.

07-28-202 6 - I just saw an ad for U.S. First Class postage stamps, Post Office price: 82¢, for 12¢. How are these not counterfeit?

07-28-2026 - Every Mail Order Dealer who has been in business for more than a year has a valuable product: a mailing list of the names of active dealers taken from their incoming mail. This list is not as valuable as a list of buyers, but still valuable. Sell the list on labels, on plain paper, or as an email text file.
