08-30-2026 - From Wikipedia - The U.S. postal strike of 1970 was an eight-day strike by federal postal workers in March 1970. The strike began in New York City and spread to some other cities in the following two weeks. This strike against the federal government, regarded as illegal, was the largest wildcat strike in U.S. history. President Richard Nixon called out the United States Armed Forces and the National Guard to distribute mail and break the strike. (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0)
08-30-2026 - Here’s a money-making idea that I thought of before there was Google Maps, forgot about once Google Maps hit the scene, and now think about again. That idea is “local scene photographer.” People in one part of the country might pay to have someone take a photo in another part of the country. But wait, all they have to do is check Google Maps for a photo. Not necessarily so! The “local scene photographer” idea re-emerged after noticing Google pics of my childhood home were dated 2011. It was updated in 2025, showing a newly painted house. There was a 14-year gap of uncertainty. Advertise your services or, alternatively, you can create an online directory of “Local Scene Photographers”, allowing only one per city. Charge a yearly fee for listings, with photographers acting as independent contractors. Clients deal directly with photographers. All you worry about is initial listings and renewals. Fine-tune this idea if you think it could work for you.

08-30-2026 - Good Morning! It's Sunday, that terrible day for some who are addicted to receiving mail, especially the kind that cold, hard cash falls out of when opened. Hold on, if you can, because Monday is just a wake-up away! Today is National Beach Day, International Whale Shark Day, Frankenstein Day, National Toasted Marshmallow Day, National Holistic Pet Day, Amagwinya Day, National Slinky Day, and Social Justice Sunday. I have several metal Slinky toys, large and small. I use them for Amateur (ham) Radio antennas. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.
08-29-2026 - A few years ago, I read an interesting article on the Postal Times website reminding postal workers of their duty to "protect the sanctity of the mail" and to never "hide, delay, destroy, or steal mail". I'm sure that 99.9% of postal workers adhere to this mantra, so I don't let the occasional story of postal "bad actors" - like the one who sold his "arrow" key for $3,000 - sway that opinion.

08-29-2026 - I was watching Top Gun: Maverick a few days ago when the featured F/A 18 aircraft reminded me of a memorable Amateur (ham) Radio contact. It was about a decade ago when I heard a ham calling on 146.520 MHz. This is the FM "calling frequency" on the 2-meter VHF band for those wanting to make contact with anyone within range. He identified himself using his FCC-assigned Amateur Radio call sign and added that he was in an F/A-18 traveling from the West Coast to the Houston, Texas, area. I answered his call for a brief contact, as others were also waiting to get him into their logbook.
08-29-2026 - Today is National Sports Day, International Cosplay Day, National Franchise Appreciation Day, National Chop Suey Day, More Herbs, Less Salt Day, International Day Against Nuclear Tests, and National Lemon Juice Day.

08-29-2026 - Good Morning! It’s Saturday, and a big “do nothing” day for me. Who wants to do anything with a forecast of 104 degrees? Well, 10,000+ cyclists are getting ready for the 44th annual Hotter’ N Hell Hundred bike ride this morning. I hope they don’t fry their brains. Our local Amateur (ham) Radio Operators provide communications support for the event. Will my Letter Carrier have anything interesting today? I’ll let you know later. As I write this, I'm listening to two Amateur (ham) Radio Operators having a nice conversation in Morse code on the 40-meter band, and my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.
08-28-2026 - According to a report by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, a joint investigation by the USPIS and the Chicago Police Department resulted in the arrest of a 24-year-old Chicago man in connection with the murder (shooting) of a USPS Letter Carrier while conducting official USPS duties. A juvenile had previously pleaded guilty to his role in the murder.
08-28-2026 - The U.S. Postal Service will issue its ninth Hanukkah stamp honoring the eight-day Jewish holiday. A ceremony, open to the public, will be held at 11:00 AM on September 29, 2026, at the Touro Synagogue, 4238 St. Charles Ave., New Orleans, LA 70115.
08-28-2026 - Today, I received a horrible 3-page mailing piece for a multilevel program centered on counterfeit postage stamps. The pages were not centered on the copier before the “copy” button was pressed. One page looked like a 25th-generation copy. The sender is not what I would call an actual Mail Order Dealer, since they didn’t know how to fold the paper neatly. This person somehow got on a mailing list, was sent this program, and signed up. Well, good luck. Another mailing included a print & mail offer. I found it amusing that the sales letter had serious bleed-through issues. At least they were honest about what I can expect my sales material to look like. I'll pass.
08-28-2026 - You’ve probably seen casino dealers, live or on TV, do the “clearing the hands” thing at the end of their shift. They clap their hands, spread their fingers, and rotate their wrists to show the top and bottom of their hands. I sometimes do this at the Walmart self-checkout. I’m sure they think I’m crazy.

08-28-2026 - SCOT-FREE - From Wikipedia - In Norman times, under the influence of the word escot, in Old French, the vowel changed, and the term became scot. In 19th century Kent and Sussex, low-lying farmland was still being called scot-land. Scot, though, gradually became a general term for local levies; a person who was not liable for the levy, but received its benefits, got off 'scot-free'.
