Today is Star Trek Day, National Ampersand Day, World Physical Therapy Day, Actors’ Day, Pardon Day, Telephone Tuesday, National Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses Day, and National Dog Walker Appreciation Day. The heat continues, with 103 degrees forecasted for today. Doesn’t the sun know it’s September? My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

09-07-2026 - Several decades ago, a then-well-known Mail Order Dealer set up an online discussion forum for dealers. I saw one discussion going on. The rest of the activity involved dealers uploading their sales circulars. I moved on.
09-07-2026 - I learned that there is a USPS facility in Utah with the sole task of reading the addresses on mail that the machines can't read. This would include bad penmanship or scribbling, if you will. It's called the USPS Encoding Center, and it's in Salt Lake City. This reminds me of an earlier post of mine in which I described the time I sent a letter to a Mail Order Dealer that was returned as "undeliverable". It was that dealer's S.A.S.E., or Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelope! Did you know the S.A.S.E. has a Wikipedia page?

09-07-2026 - Good Morning! It's Monday, Labor Day, and there's no mail delivery. I was so looking forward to some more crappy sales circulars today. I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow. The same people who would scream if they received a letter from their bank or another professional entity that looked like a 10th-generation copy, complete with faded text and black specks scattered about, have no problem mailing the same garbage to other Mail Order Dealers. I can hear them sobbing now - "I can't get any orders. I don't understand it." My Folgers Black Silk Coffee is ready!
09-06-2026 - I met Major General George Patton IV, son of the WWII General Patton, on a Field Training Exercise at Fort Irwin in California's Mojave Desert in 1977. The General's jeep rolled up on my Dismount Point in the middle of the night. I gave the driver the "challenge". The general removed his helmet and said, "Son, you should know me; I'm General Patton. If you're looking for a password, we don't know it!" Due to the "blackout" conditions, I had a "ground guide" escort the general.

I would create what I thought was a fantastic information product, create an ad for it, and send the ad to one or more of the popular adsheet and/or tabloid publishers. I just knew these publishers would be the first to order whatever I was selling. It never happened. That’s not to say that no one ordered; it just wasn’t those publishers.

09-06-2026 - Those “checking copy only” adsheets can be good or bad. It all depends on whether or not you know they’re coming. I’ll explain. A few “low circulation” (100 to 200 circulation) adsheet publishers have been accused of not mailing the adsheet, other than the “checking copy” they send back to the dealer placing an ad. If there are 21-24 spaces for 1-inch display ads, that’s all the circulation any dealer will get. What if these ad sheet publishers made it clear up front that this was the only circulation advertisers would get? That’s 21-24 mailings each dealer didn’t have to do. It would be more of an “ad exchange” than an adsheet. That’s not a bad thing.
